Yes, and it runs two separate clocks. If you don't open your Yahoo Mail mailbox for 12 months, Yahoo permanently deletes its emails, folders, contacts and mailbox settings (Yahoo Help). If you don't sign in to your Yahoo account for 24 months, Yahoo schedules the whole account for deactivation and deletion (Yahoo Help).
What does Yahoo delete at 12 months, and what survives?#
Yahoo treats a mailbox as inactive once you haven't accessed it for 12 months (Yahoo Help: inactive mailboxes). At that point Yahoo permanently deletes:
- every email in the mailbox
- the folders you sorted them into
- your contacts
- your mailbox settings
Yahoo says none of it can be restored. The Yahoo ID itself survives this deletion, because the address runs on the separate 24-month account clock covered below.
An inactive mailbox also stops receiving new emails (Yahoo Help: why Yahoo deactivates or deletes accounts). The address can still exist on paper while every message sent to it goes nowhere.
How long until Yahoo deletes the whole account?#
After 24 months without a sign-in, Yahoo schedules the account for deactivation and deletion (Yahoo Help). Once the account is deleted, Yahoo says it can't be recovered and you can no longer use the email address that went with it (Yahoo Help). Separately, Section 7(c) of the Yahoo Terms of Service lets Yahoo suspend or terminate accounts at any time without notice, and lists inactivity among the reasons.

What counts as activity for Yahoo's inactivity rules?#
The two clocks measure different actions. For the mailbox, Yahoo requires you to access the mailbox itself and says a sign-in to your Yahoo account alone does not count (Yahoo Help). For the account, a sign-in is the measure (Yahoo Help).
That mismatch means you can sign in to Yahoo Finance or Yahoo Fantasy often enough to keep your Yahoo ID, never click into the inbox, and still lose every email at the 12-month mark. Opening Yahoo Mail itself is the only action Yahoo describes as resetting both clocks.
Will Yahoo warn you before deleting anything?#
For mailbox content, yes. Yahoo sends a reminder 90 days before deleting it, to two places: the Yahoo mailbox itself and your verified alternative email address (Yahoo Help).
Both destinations are likely to be dead ends. The first is the inbox you haven't opened in nine months, which is why the clock is running. The second is whatever backup address you verified when you set the account up, which may be a university or old work address you no longer control.
For the 24-month account clock, Yahoo's deactivation page repeats the 90-day mailbox reminder but doesn't describe a separate one before deleting the account (Yahoo Help). Read alongside the no-notice clause in Section 7(c) of the Terms of Service, that gives you no documented second warning to count on.
Can you recover an inactive Yahoo account or its emails?#
Yahoo gives a different answer for each of the three things you might be trying to get back.
- Deleted emails, folders and contacts: no. Signing back in to an inactive mailbox does not restore deleted emails, folders, contacts or mailbox settings (Yahoo Help).
- Access to an account that still exists: Yahoo's Sign-in Helper works through your recovery phone number or email address, and Yahoo warns that if that recovery info is wrong or inaccessible, you may not be able to get back in (Yahoo Help: Sign-in Helper).
- A permanently deleted Yahoo ID: no. Yahoo says you can't use a deleted ID again (Yahoo Help: reusing a deactivated ID).
Closing an account on purpose follows different rules. In most regions you can reactivate a closed account by signing in within 30 days; the window is 90 days for accounts registered in Australia or New Zealand, and 180 days for Brazil, Hong Kong, India or Taiwan (Yahoo Help: closing an account). That grace period applies to accounts you close yourself, not to deletion for inactivity.
Can Yahoo give your old address to someone else?#
Yahoo's help page says no, its Terms of Service still allow it, and Yahoo did it in 2013.
- Current help page: Yahoo says it does not make deleted Yahoo IDs available to anyone else (Yahoo Help).
- Terms of Service, Section 7(d): if your account is terminated, "your username may be recycled for use by others" (Yahoo Terms).
- July 2013: Yahoo reclaimed IDs unused for at least a year. Anyone could request one at wishlist.yahoo.com from July 15 to August 7, 2013, owners got 30 days to sign in and keep their accounts, and mail sent to the inactive accounts was bounced (NBC News).
- August 26, 2013: Yahoo began handing the recycled usernames to the people who requested them, and sold a $1.99 Watchlist for monitoring up to five names (TechCrunch).
NBC News reported the concern at the time: whoever received a recycled address could request password resets for the former owner's Facebook, Twitter or Amazon logins (NBC News). A partial fix arrived in July 2014 as RFC 7293, the Require-Recipient-Valid-Since header, written by William Mills of Yahoo and Murray Kucherawy of Facebook for exactly this reassigned-address case. Facebook and Yahoo implemented it so a message can be blocked when the receiving address has changed owners since the sender last confirmed it (Computerworld). That coverage names only those two companies, not banks or domain registrars.
Yahoo's current help text says it won't reassign your address, but Section 7(d) doesn't bind it to that. Any bank or registrar login still tied to an old Yahoo address is relying on a help page, not a contract.
Why does an inactive Yahoo mailbox lock you out of other accounts?#
An old Yahoo address is often the recovery email for a bank, a domain registrar or a client portal. Once the mailbox goes inactive it stops receiving new email (Yahoo Help), so password resets and security alerts from those services vanish without a bounce you would ever see.
Yahoo itself relies on your recovery phone and email for password resets, verification codes and notices about account changes (Yahoo Help: recovery contact info). Your Yahoo address may be doing that job for a dozen other accounts, and each of them loses its reset path the day the mailbox stops accepting mail.

Does AOL delete inactive accounts?#
AOL, which Yahoo's parent company also runs, describes the same 12-month mailbox rule. According to AOL Help, if you haven't signed in to AOL Mail for 12 months or more, the mailbox becomes inactive, stops receiving new emails, and its contents, folders, contacts and settings are permanently deleted (AOL Help).
AOL's separate article on account deactivation and deletion (AOL Help) does not state an account-level timeline, so don't assume Yahoo's 24-month account rule carries over to AOL.
How do Yahoo's clocks compare with Google and Microsoft?#
Yahoo and Microsoft both pair a shorter mailbox clock with a longer account clock. Google runs a single two-year clock for the whole account.

Three rules sit outside the table:
- Google counts reading or sending email, using Drive, watching YouTube, using Search and signing in with Google as activity; the policy excludes work and school accounts, and the earliest deletion date was December 1, 2023 (Google Account Help).
- In its May 16, 2023 announcement, Google said it would send multiple notices in the months before deletion and would start with accounts created and never used again (Google blog).
- Microsoft also treats an account that has stayed locked for more than two years as inactive and closes it (Microsoft Support).
How do you keep an old Yahoo address from going silent?#
Run this checklist today, then put a calendar reminder every six months so you never get near the 12-month mailbox cutoff.
- Open Yahoo Mail itself. A plain Yahoo sign-in doesn't count as mailbox activity (Yahoo Help).
- Confirm you're signed in to the account. That resets the 24-month account clock (Yahoo Help).
- Replace the verified alternative email with one you read weekly. It's one of only two places the 90-day deletion reminder goes (Yahoo Help).
- Check that your recovery phone number is current. Sign-in Helper depends on it, and wrong or inaccessible recovery info may lock you out (Yahoo Help).
- Export the emails you'd need, such as receipts, contracts and registrar confirmations, because deleted mailbox content can't be restored (Yahoo Help).
- List every account that uses this Yahoo address to log in or recover access, starting with your bank, domain registrar and client portals, and move each one to an address you check.
- Consider Yahoo Mail Plus if you want the mailbox kept without opening it. Yahoo says it won't delete your mailbox for inactivity while the subscription is active, though Mail Plus isn't sold in every region (Yahoo Help); the US page lists it at $5 a month (Yahoo Mail Plus).
