Does AOL delete inactive accounts? The 12- and 24-month rules
Does AOL delete inactive accounts? Yes. The mailbox is emptied after 12 months and the account can go after 24. Here is what is lost and how to keep your account.
Yes, at two levels. If nobody signs in to AOL Mail for 12 months, AOL treats the mailbox as inactive and permanently deletes its contents, folders, contacts and settings. If nobody signs in to the account for 24 months, AOL can delete the whole account, and the old username can't be used again.
The 24-month account rule is new. Archived copies of AOL's help article up to 11 April 2026 say 12 months, and the page now shows a last update of 27 May 2026 with the 24-month wording.
What does AOL delete after 12 months without a sign-in?#
If you haven't signed in to AOL Mail for 12 months or more, the mailbox stops receiving new email, and all mailbox contents, folders, contacts and settings are permanently deleted. AOL also says content deleted from an inactive mailbox can't be restored.
The address itself survives this first stage. You can recover an inactive mailbox by signing in to it, but that only gets the email address back, not the original contents, and custom mailbox settings have to be set up again.
At month 12, then, the account still exists, but the mailbox is empty and any mail sent to it while it was inactive was never received.
When does AOL delete the whole account?#
AOL's current list of reasons an account can be deleted, last updated 27 May 2026, has three entries: you asked for deletion, you didn't sign in to your account in the past 24 months, or the account was used in violation of the Terms of Service.
Once the account is deleted, you can create a new one, but your old username won't be available for you to use again.
How has AOL's account-deletion rule changed?#
| When | What AOL's help pages said about account deletion |
|---|---|
| Older help article, updated October 2023 | Deleted if it "was inactive for an extended period of time", with no number given; old username "may not be available" |
| Archived snapshots from September 2024 through 11 April 2026 | "You didn't sign in to your account in the past 12 months" |
| Archived snapshot from 10 July 2026, and the live page | "You didn't sign in to your account in the past 24 months" |
A source that says AOL deletes accounts after 12 months is quoting the pre-May 2026 wording or mixing up the account with the mailbox. The mailbox rule is still 12 months.
How can you check whether an old AOL account still exists?#
Run AOL's account recovery flow with the address. If the account is gone, AOL says you'll see a prompt that it has been deactivated or that you can't reset your password online. The older help article notes that the same deletion applies to CompuServe and Netscape accounts, so an old @cs.com or @netscape.net address is worth checking the same way.
Does AOL warn you before deleting an inactive account?#
Not reliably. AOL's inactive-mailbox page mentions no warning email, and searching AOL's help center for "inactive", "inactivity", "reminder" and "warning" turned up no article that promises reminder emails before inactivity deletion.
The Terms go further. Section 7(c) says AOL may suspend or terminate your account "without notice and for any reason", and lists inactivity as one of those reasons. Section 7(d) adds that termination can end access to your username, password and all related information, files and content.
The exception is the EMEA section of the same Terms. Section 14(e) lets AOL act when an account shows extended periods of inactivity in accordance with its account deletion policy, but for permanent suspension or termination it promises advance notice and reasonable time to save your information, with some exceptions. Users outside EMEA get no such promise.
Yahoo, by contrast, sends reminders 90, 60 and 30 days before mailbox content is deleted, to the Yahoo mailbox and to any alternate email on file. Anyone who also has a Yahoo account shouldn't assume AOL will send the same three emails.
Does AOL delete old emails in an account you still use?#
AOL Mail keeps the content of your mailbox as long as it remains active. Two folders are on fixed timers:
- Trash is emptied after 7 days.
- Spam is emptied after 30 days.
AOL says these timers are set by the system and can't be changed. Mail still in Trash can be moved back with "Restore to inbox". If mail was permanently deleted or went missing in the last 7 days, AOL says to call and it will try to recover it.
Your phone's mail app can also delete AOL mail. Most phone apps and some desktop apps use IMAP, which mirrors your actions back to the AOL account: mail you delete in the app goes to AOL's Trash, and emptying Trash in the app removes it from the account. An app set up with POP has a setting that deletes mail from AOL's server as it downloads it.
What happens at each stage of AOL's deletion timeline?#
| When | What happens | Can you undo it? |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days after a message goes to Trash | Trash is emptied | Call AOL within 7 days; recovery is attempted, not guaranteed |
| 30 days after a message lands in Spam | Spam is emptied | AOL describes no restore option |
| 12 months without a sign-in | Mailbox goes inactive; stops receiving mail; contents, folders, contacts and settings deleted | Signing in restores the address only, not the content |
| 24 months without a sign-in | Account can be deleted | No; the old username can't be used again |

How do you keep an AOL account from being deleted?#
Use this checklist for your own account, or for any AOL address you depend on for logins or family contact.
- Sign in to AOL Mail at least once every 12 months. That is AOL's own advice for keeping the mailbox active. Opening AOL Mail requires signing in to your AOL account, so the same sign-in also resets the clock on the 24-month account rule.
- Or pay for Extended AOL Mail. It costs $1 a month, billed annually, and keeps emails, attachments and photos from being purged for inactivity, so you no longer have to worry about signing in. It is still subject to storage limits, spam and email abuse policies and future storage-policy changes, and it isn't offered in every country. An active AOL Mail Plus subscription also stops emails being deleted for inactivity.
- Export the mail you can't lose, using IMAP export or Download My Data (both explained below).
- Check your mail app's delete settings. IMAP deletes and POP's delete-from-server setting can remove mail from the AOL account.
- List every account that sends password resets to the AOL address. If the AOL account is deleted, those reset emails have nowhere to land, and the username won't be available to you again. Move each one to an address you check.
How do you back up AOL Mail before it is deleted?#
IMAP export. Add the account to a desktop mail program using export.imap.aol.com, port 993, with SSL. If the app asks whether to keep mail on the server, choose yes; otherwise the mail is deleted from the AOL account as it downloads.
Download My Data. In the Privacy Dashboard, request a download of your account data. It can take up to 30 days, and AOL emails you when it's ready, so an account at month 11 without a sign-in should be signed in to first and exported second.
How does AOL compare with Yahoo?#
AOL belonged to Yahoo, Inc. until January 2026, which is why the two rulebooks still look alike. On 31 October 2025, Bending Spoons agreed to buy AOL from Yahoo, with its CEO citing around 8 million daily and 30 million monthly active users, and it now lists AOL as acquired January 2026. The May 2026 change from 12 to 24 months came after that sale, and Yahoo's account rule did not follow it.
| AOL | Yahoo | |
|---|---|---|
| Mailbox emptied after | 12 months without a sign-in to AOL Mail | 12 months without accessing the mailbox |
| Whole account deleted after | 24 months without a sign-in | 18 months without a sign-in |
| Reminders before deletion | None promised in help pages; advance notice in the Terms for EMEA only | 90, 60 and 30 days before mailbox content is deleted |
| Paid option that stops inactivity deletion | Extended AOL Mail, $1 a month billed annually, or AOL Mail Plus | Yahoo Mail Plus |
| Owner | Bending Spoons, since January 2026 | Yahoo, Inc. |
One Yahoo detail catches people out: signing in to the Yahoo account alone doesn't count as mailbox activity; you have to open the mailbox. The full Yahoo timeline is in our post on how Yahoo deletes inactive accounts and mailboxes.
What happens to an AOL account when the owner dies?#
By default, the account doesn't pass to anyone. AOL's Terms say all accounts are non-transferable and any rights to them terminate upon the account holder's death, and the U.S. section adds that rights to the content inside the account end then too.
For U.S. accounts only, AOL has a process for family and executors. AOL will not give out the password or login details. What you can ask for depends on the paperwork:
| Request | What AOL asks for |
|---|---|
| Close the account | A U.S.-issued death certificate |
| Suspend or cancel billing and premium services | A U.S.-issued death certificate; if you don't have one, call AOL Customer Service at 800-827-6364 |
| Access or transfer of ownership (very limited circumstances) | Death certificate, your government ID, and a will or executor/administration notice giving you access to digital assets, or a U.S. court order |
| A copy of the account's content | Death certificate, your government ID, and a U.S. court order |
Requests for non-U.S. accounts won't be accepted or get a response.
The two clocks collide here. A content request needs a U.S. court order, and the mailbox is emptied once it reaches 12 months without a sign-in, so a family that waits on probate can lose the mail before the order arrives. If you are the account holder, export the mail yourself and leave a note saying where the export is kept. Proceedly handles that note: it stores your instructions and the location of your files, never the passwords, and passes them to the people you name if you stop checking in.
How is closing an account yourself different from deletion for inactivity?#
When you close an AOL account yourself, you lose your emails and email folders, and the address is gone for good, for you and for anyone else. You get a recovery window first, which depends on where the account was registered:
- 30 days for most accounts
- 90 days in Australia, India and New Zealand
- 180 days in Brazil, Hong Kong and Taiwan
After that window, the account and its data are gone. AOL's help pages describe no recovery window for an account deleted for inactivity. The sources also disagree on reuse: the help page says nobody can reuse a closed address, while Section 7(d) of the Terms says your username may be recycled for use by others after termination. Under either reading, you can't count on getting it back.
FAQ#
Does AOL delete inactive email accounts after one year?#
AOL empties the mailbox after 12 months without a sign-in to AOL Mail. The account itself can be deleted after 24 months without a sign-in. Before AOL's 27 May 2026 update, the help page said 12 months for the account too.
Can I recover emails from an inactive AOL mailbox?#
No. AOL says content deleted from an inactive mailbox can't be restored. Signing back in returns the address, but not the old mail, contacts or settings.
Will AOL email me before deleting my account?#
No AOL help page promises it, and the Terms allow termination for inactivity without notice. Only users in the EMEA region are promised advance notice in the Terms before permanent termination.
Does Extended AOL Mail stop deletion for inactivity?#
Yes, for emails, attachments and photos. It costs $1 a month, billed annually, is still subject to storage limits, and isn't available in every country.
Can I get my old AOL username back after the account is deleted?#
No. AOL says your old username won't be available for you to use again, even if you create a new account.
Does AOL delete old emails in my inbox?#
Not while the mailbox is active. Only Trash (after 7 days) and Spam (after 30 days) empty automatically, and you can't change those timers.
Can I get into a parent's AOL account after they die?#
AOL won't give out the password. For U.S. accounts, it can close the account with a death certificate, and in limited cases grant access or provide content with a death certificate, your ID, and a will, executor notice or U.S. court order.
Is AOL still owned by Yahoo?#
No. Bending Spoons lists AOL as acquired January 2026.
