Does TikTok delete inactive accounts? The 180-day rule
Does TikTok delete inactive accounts? No, but after 180 days without a login your username may be reset. What TikTok's official policy and Terms actually say.
No. TikTok's Inactive Account Policy says inactive users "will not be blocked, removed, or considered as inauthentic", but if an account goes 180 days or more without being used to access TikTok, its username may be reset to a random numeric one. The account survives. Your @handle may not.
What does TikTok's inactive account policy actually say?#
Two official TikTok documents cover inactivity, and both are about the username, not the account.
The first is the Help Center's Inactive Account Policy. It says that if an account stays inactive for 180 days or more, its username may be reset to a randomized numeric username. The same page says a username can also be reset when TikTok receives a valid request, such as a trademark infringement notice.
The second is the US Terms of Service, marked "Last updated: July 15, 2026". In the US, the Terms are an agreement between you and TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, which runs the platform there. Section 3.2 says TikTok "may revoke, reclaim, and/or reassign the username of your account in certain circumstances". It lists these examples:
- you haven't logged in for 180 days
- TikTok has banned the account
- TikTok believes the username breaks the Terms, Community Guidelines or other policies
- the username interferes with or infringes the rights of other users
That 180-day clause is the only place in the US Terms that ties a consequence to a period of non-use. It applies to the username, not to deleting the account. The words "inactive" and "deactivation" don't appear anywhere in the Terms.
What does TikTok count as an inactive account?#
TikTok treats an account as inactive if it was not used to access TikTok for at least 180 days. The Terms put it as not logging in for 180 days.
Posting is not the test. An account that hasn't posted since last year but logs in every month to watch videos is not inactive under this wording. That also means you can't judge someone else's handle by their last upload, and TikTok confirms that whether an account is inactive is not publicly visible.
Inactive is also a separate category from inauthentic. TikTok reserves "inauthentic" for accounts that were created by bots, post spam comments or phishing information, take part in scams or create fake video views, and says inactive users are not treated that way.
What happens to an inactive TikTok account's username?#
It may be replaced with a random string of numbers. The Help Center calls this a reset to a "randomized numeric username". The Terms go further and let TikTok revoke, reclaim or reassign it.
For a creator, the handle is the asset at risk: it's the address people type, tag and print on merch. TikTok's username help page explains that the username is separate from your account name, which is the name shown on your profile. So a reset handle can sit under a familiar display name and still break every link and tag you've shared.
Picking a replacement handle has its own limits on the same page. You can change your username only once every 30 days. Usernames can contain only letters, numbers, underscores and periods, and they can't end with a period.
What happens to inactive TikTok accounts' videos and followers?#
TikTok doesn't document any change. The Help Center says inactive users will not be blocked or removed, and neither that policy nor the Terms of Service mentions deleting content because of inactivity.
The username reset is the only documented consequence of not logging in.
Does TikTok delete old accounts?#
Not for being old or inactive. An old account that hasn't been opened in 180 days falls under the same username reset rule as a new one.
Accounts do get removed for conduct. In Section 5.2 of the US Terms, TikTok reserves the right, "at any time and without prior notice, to ban or suspend your account". The listed grounds include:
- TikTok believing you've broken the Terms, Community Guidelines or other policies
- legal requirements
- technical or security issues
- suspected fraud or other illegal activity
That list is open-ended, because Section 9 of the Terms defines "including" as "including but not limited to". You can appeal a ban you think is wrong. A ban also triggers the username clause in Section 3.2, which names a banned account as one case where TikTok may reclaim the handle.
What is the difference between inactive, deactivated, deleted and memorialized?#
TikTok's Help Center gives each of these four states its own page, trigger and rules:
| Inactive | Deactivated | Deleted | Memorialized | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trigger | No access to TikTok for 180 days or more | You put the account on a temporary hold | You delete it via Settings and privacy | Usually a request from a family member or legal guardian with proof of death and proof of ownership. TikTok may also act on its own once credible sources confirm the death |
| Who starts it | Nobody. It is an absence of logins. | You | You | Family or guardian, or TikTok |
| Username | May be reset to a random numeric one | Not covered on the deactivation page | Not covered on the deletion page | Can't be edited unless a legacy contact has the right permissions |
| Content visibility | No documented change. Users are not blocked or removed. | No one sees your profile or content, but DMs you sent, and Duets or Stitches, may stay visible | Deleting the account deletes all Your Content, but content other users have built into their posts may stay up | Generally visible and searchable, not shown on For You |
| Can it be undone? | Yes. Log in. | Yes, "anytime", by logging in and tapping Reactivate | TikTok's deletion page doesn't say. Third-party guides describe a 30-day window. | Nobody can log in, post or receive new DMs |
| Official source | Inactive Account Policy | Deactivate your account | Delete your account | Managing accounts after death |
Inactive is the only state that happens without anyone choosing it, and deletion is the only one TikTok describes as removing your content.
How long does TikTok keep inactive and deactivated accounts?#
TikTok gives no time limit for either.
For inactive accounts, the US Privacy Policy (also last updated July 15, 2026) says TikTok keeps information "for as long as necessary to provide the Services" and keeps account registration information "for as long as you have an account". The EEA Privacy Policy, last updated 30 November 2025, uses the same "for as long as you have an account" wording. Neither policy mentions inactive accounts.
For deactivated accounts, the Help Center says you lose access while the account is deactivated, but TikTok keeps your data so you can recover it if you reactivate, and "you can reactivate it anytime". The page gives no expiry date and never says a deactivated account is deleted automatically.
Does TikTok delete deactivated accounts after 30 days?#
No official TikTok page says so. The Help Center deactivation page, the US Privacy Policy and the EEA Privacy Policy don't mention a 30-day rule.
The 30-day figure comes from third-party guides, and they attach it to deletion, not deactivation. IONOS, for example, says that after you confirm deletion, the account stays deactivated for 30 days before it is permanently deleted, and logging in during that time reactivates it. TikTok's own Delete your account page doesn't state that window and points readers to the Privacy Policy for how data is handled.
The two options get confused because both sit under one menu item, Deactivate or delete account. If the deletion screen shows a deadline, trust that screen over any blog post's number, including this one.
Can you buy an inactive TikTok account or its username?#
Not within TikTok's rules, and buying one doesn't protect the handle anyway.
- Transfers are banned. Section 3.2 of the Terms says: "Do not give others access to your account, or transfer your account to anyone else, without our permission."
- Using someone else's account is banned. Section 3.4 of the Terms prohibits using, or trying to use, another user's account without authorization.
- Bought engagement is banned. The Integrity and Authenticity guidelines (released 25 August 2026, in effect from 24 September 2026) don't allow the trade of services that artificially boost engagement. When TikTok detects inauthentic metrics, it removes fake likes, followers and other inflated signals.
- The handle still isn't safe. A bought account falls under the same 180-day reset rule as any other, so the handle you paid for can be reset after 180 days without a login.
Can you claim someone else's inactive TikTok username?#
Usually not. TikTok's policy states that "In most instances, we cannot reassign a username." It suggests a variation instead, such as adding numbers or underscores, or using an abbreviation.
The one documented route is intellectual property. If a username infringes your intellectual property rights, TikTok points you to its Intellectual Property Policy, and a valid request such as a trademark infringement notice is one of the stated reasons a username may be reset.
If your audience is also on Instagram, its rules are separate. Here is how Instagram handles inactive accounts and usernames.
How do you keep your TikTok account and handle safe if you go silent?#
The 180-day clock only bites when nobody can log in. So the work is making sure you can get back in, and that someone you trust can act within TikTok's rules. Before a long break:
- Log in at least once every 180 days. Under the Inactive Account Policy, that is the whole test. Set a calendar reminder for day 150, not day 179.
- Link both a phone number and an email. TikTok's Account safety page recommends two contact methods, so you can still log in if one is compromised. Run Security checkup under Settings and privacy > Security & permissions.
- Turn on 2-step verification. TikTok strongly recommends it and asks you to choose at least two methods. Phone, email and an authenticator app are each marked "recommended".
- Add a passkey. TikTok says passkeys can be a more secure login method than traditional passwords. While you're in Security checkup, review your trusted devices and security activity.
- Set an Account Legacy contact, or choose "Delete after death". Go to Settings and privacy > Account > Account legacy. Users aged 18 or over can add one legacy contact, who must be a TikTok friend (a follower you follow back).
- Download your data on a schedule. Request it under Settings and privacy > Account > Download your data. The file can take a few days to prepare and stays available for up to 4 days, so save it as soon as it's ready.
- Deactivate instead of deleting if you need a break. Deactivation keeps your data and can be reversed anytime. The path is Profile > Menu > Settings and privacy > Account > Deactivate or delete account > Deactivate account.
- Never share your login or hand over the account. The Terms ask you to keep your password confidential and not disclose it to any third party, and to tell TikTok if you think someone else knows it or has accessed your account.
That last rule leaves a gap for anyone who runs a business on TikTok. A legacy contact with the right permissions can update your bio, manage some settings, request deletion and download your posts. But a legacy contact can't log in, edit or remove posts, or read your DMs, so nobody can legitimately log in for you on day 170. Nothing in TikTok tells a collaborator which brand deal is due or where your recovery codes are kept, either.
Proceedly covers that gap with a regular check-in. If you miss it and the grace window runs out, a person you name confirms the release (on a paid plan, it can release automatically instead). Your encrypted handoff plan then reaches the people who depend on you. The plan holds your instructions and where the keys are kept, never the passwords themselves.
FAQ#
Does TikTok delete inactive accounts in 2026?#
No. The Help Center says inactive users will not be blocked or removed. The only inactivity rule in the US Terms, updated July 15, 2026, is that TikTok may reclaim the username after 180 days without a login.
How long until TikTok resets an inactive username?#
After 180 days or more without using the account to access TikTok, according to the Inactive Account Policy. The policy says "may", so a reset isn't guaranteed on day 181, but treat day 180 as the deadline.
What does Reddit say about TikTok deleting inactive accounts?#
Reddit threads report individual cases, and none can show whether a lost handle came from the 180-day rule, a ban or a trademark request. The official reference is TikTok's 180-day username rule, which resets the handle and doesn't delete the account.
Will a deactivated TikTok account be deleted automatically?#
TikTok's deactivation page gives no expiry date. It says you can reactivate anytime by logging in with the same credentials and tapping Reactivate.
Can I tell whether a TikTok account is inactive?#
No. TikTok says inactive status is not publicly visible. The test is whether the account was used to access TikTok, which outsiders can't see.
What happens to a TikTok account if the owner dies?#
TikTok's policy lets it memorialize or delete the account. This usually starts with a request from a family member or legal guardian, who must show proof of death and proof of ownership. A memorialized account generally stays visible and searchable, but nobody can log in or post, and it can't receive new DMs. If the owner set a legacy contact in advance, that person can manage whatever the permissions allow.
