Does Instagram delete inactive accounts? Meta's 2026 rules
Does Instagram delete inactive accounts? No current Meta rule does. See what the Terms say, how deactivation and deletion differ, and when usernames free up.
No published Instagram rule deletes an account for inactivity: the Terms of Use effective 1 January 2025 list the grounds for disabling or terminating an account, and inactivity is not one of them. Meta's inactive username policy only asks you to log in, share, like and comment, with no deletion rule or timeline. A 2013 version of that page warned that accounts may be permanently removed due to prolonged inactivity, but Instagram had deleted that sentence by April 2020.
What do Instagram's Terms and Help Center say about inactive accounts today?#
Two current Meta documents settle this, and neither names inactivity as a reason to remove an account.
The first is the inactive username policy. The entire live article, Threads and Instagram's inactive username policy, says Meta encourages people to log in and use Instagram and Threads after signing up, and that you keep an account active by logging in, sharing photos, and liking and commenting on photos. It contains no rule, no warning period and no deletion date.
The second is section 6 of the Instagram Terms of Use, "Content Removal and Disabling or Terminating Your Account". It lets Meta terminate or disable your access:
- to protect the community or services
- if you create risk or legal exposure for Meta
- if you violate the Terms or Meta's policies, including the Community Standards
- if you repeatedly infringe other people's intellectual property rights
- where Meta is required to by law
The same section adds that Meta can stop providing all or part of the Service if that is reasonably necessary to avoid or mitigate adverse legal or regulatory impacts on Meta. The word "inactive" does not appear anywhere in the Terms.
Meta's Privacy Policy matches: it decides retention case by case, keeps information as long as needed to provide its products, meet legal obligations or protect interests, and cites "maintain your account" as one reason for keeping data. It states no inactivity-based deletion rule.
How long before Instagram deletes an inactive account?#
Meta publishes no timeline. None of the current or archived Meta pages checked for this post gives a number of months or years.
Figures such as "12 to 24 months" or "90 days" circulate on third-party sites, but none trace to a Meta page. Even the 2013 warning, the strongest wording Instagram ever published on this, said only "prolonged inactivity" and named no period. If a site quotes an exact number of days, ask it for the Meta URL.
What did Instagram's inactive account policy say before?#
Instagram softened the policy, not tightened it. Archived copies of the same Help Center URL show the change:
| Date of archived copy | What the inactive username page said |
|---|---|
| March 2013 | Encouraged logging in and using the account, then added: "Accounts may be permanently removed due to prolonged inactivity, so please use your account once you sign up!" No time period. |
| April 2020 | The removal sentence was gone. Only the encouragement to log in, share, like and comment remained. |
| Live page, 2026 | Same encouragement, now covering Instagram and Threads. No deletion rule, no timeline. |
Any post that quotes the 2013 line as current policy is citing text Instagram removed at least six years ago.
How did Instagram decide an account was inactive?#
A separate Help Center article used to explain this, and it no longer exists. The 2013 version, "How does Instagram determine inactivity?", and a January 2021 copy listed the same five factors:
- when the account was created
- whether it had been sharing photos
- whether it had been commenting
- whether it had been liking
- whether it had been logging in
Both versions added that not all account activity is publicly visible. A profile with no posts since 2019 can belong to someone who logs in every week just to read.
That URL now loads About disabled Instagram accounts instead, so the standalone inactivity article is retired.
Will Instagram delete my account if I don't use it?#
Nothing Meta publishes in 2026 says it will. Every documented removal reason is about conduct or law, not silence:
- Community Standards and spam. The Help Center says spam, fake accounts, and people and posts that don't follow the Community Standards may be removed.
- Disabled accounts. Accounts that don't follow the Community Standards may be disabled, and you see a message when you try to log in.
- Age rules. In certain regions, accounts of people in a specific age range may be disabled under local laws.
- Legal risk. The Terms let Meta stop providing the Service to avoid adverse legal or regulatory impacts.
The real risk of going quiet is losing your own way back in, which the checklist further down addresses.
Inactive, deactivated, deletion requested, memorialized: what is the difference?#
Only two of these four states run on a documented clock, and only one is something Instagram starts without you:
| Inactive (just unused) | Temporarily deactivated | Deletion requested | Memorialized | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who starts it | Nobody. It is only an absence of activity. | You, logged in. Allowed once a week. | You, logged in. Instagram can't delete a profile for you. | Anyone, with proof of death such as a link to an obituary. |
| What others see | No documented change. | Your photos, comments and likes are hidden. | Content is not accessible to other people during the window. | Posts stay visible to their original audience, with "Remembering" next to the name. |
| How it is undone | Log in and use the account. | Log back in. | Log back in before the deadline. | Nobody can log in. A legacy contact can update the profile picture and manage tags. |
| Published timeline | None. | No maximum period and no point of automatic deletion. | 30 days to cancel (varies by region), up to 90 days to complete, up to another 90 days for backups. | None stated. |
| Username | No release rule published. | The article is silent. | Reusable after deletion if nobody has taken it. | Not addressed. |
Does Instagram delete deactivated accounts after 30 days or a year?#
Instagram documents no limit. Its deactivation article says your photos, comments and likes stay hidden until you log back in, and names no maximum period or automatic deletion point.
The "30 days" people remember belongs to deletion requests. Both options sit behind the same menu path, Accounts Center, then Personal details, then Account ownership and control, then Deactivation or deletion, which is why they get mixed up. Some accounts now see Meta Account settings in that place instead.
What happens after you ask Instagram to delete your account?#
A deletion request, unlike inactivity, runs on four documented stages:
- Up to 30 days to change your mind. Deletion starts automatically no more than 30 days after the request, and the cancellation window varies by region. Cancel by logging back in before the deadline.
- Up to 90 days to complete. Removing content can take up to 90 days after deletion begins, and other users can't see it meanwhile.
- Up to another 90 days for backups. Clearing backup and disaster-recovery systems can take up to another 90 days.
- Longer in some cases. Meta may keep content where others still use it under the license, where technical limits apply, or to investigate violations, preserve evidence or comply with requests from authorities.
When it finishes, your profile, photos, videos, comments, likes and followers are permanently removed and the Export your information tool stops working for that profile. A deleted account can't be restored.
Can you claim an inactive Instagram username?#
Not through any process Meta documents. For a username held by an account that seems inactive, Meta's answer is to choose an available version with periods, numbers, underscores or abbreviations, which is essentially what it advised in 2013.
Three rules block the usual workarounds:
- No reservations. Usernames are first-come, first-served and may not be reserved.
- No buying. The Terms prohibit attempts to buy, sell or transfer any aspect of an account, including the username.
- No inactivity report. No Meta page offers one.
The two documented routes are intellectual property and impersonation: Instagram may change a username that infringes someone's intellectual property or impersonates another user. A trademark owner can report the username, but a trademark used in a way that has nothing to do with the product or service it was granted for is not a violation.
When does an Instagram username become available again?#
Only after the account holding it is deleted, and only if nobody grabs it first. You can reuse a username as long as it hasn't been taken by a new person.
Two exceptions apply. A profile removed for violating the Community Standards may not get its username back, and a new account on the same email address may not get the same username. Because no rule deletes accounts for inactivity, an unused account's username sits on no release schedule at all.
How do you keep an Instagram account reachable if you go silent?#
Instagram won't delete a quiet account, but it won't rescue one with stale recovery details either: if you lose the registered email and never linked Facebook, Instagram says it is unable to give you access to the account.
Before a long break:
- Update the email and phone number to ones you will still control in five years; Instagram calls this necessary to keep accessing the account.
- Link Facebook if you use it. It is the documented fallback for a password reset when the email is gone.
- Log in every few months. It is the one activity the inactive username policy asks for, and it tests your login before you need it.
- Export your information while you can; the tool is unavailable after deletion.
- Deactivate rather than delete to hide the profile but keep it recoverable; deactivation has no documented expiry.
- Pick a legacy contact or Delete After Death. A legacy contact requires you to be 18 or older; Delete After Death removes the profile once Meta gets a valid memorialization request. Our guide to what happens to your Instagram account if you become permanently unreachable compares both settings.
A legacy contact can't post or see your messages, and Instagram can't provide login information for memorialized profiles. If the account runs client work or a shop, neither setting tells anyone which client to call or where the recovery codes are kept. Proceedly fills that gap with a check-in: miss it past a grace window and a person you name confirms (or, on a paid plan, it releases automatically) before your encrypted handoff plan reaches the people who depend on you. It stores instructions and where the keys live, never the passwords.
FAQ#
Does Instagram delete inactive accounts in 2026?#
Not under any published rule. The Terms effective 1 January 2025 list the grounds for termination, and inactivity is not among them. The same Terms promise at least 30 days' notice before changes unless the law requires otherwise, so a new inactivity rule would normally appear there first.
Does Instagram delete accounts that have been inactive for 10 years?#
No Meta source says so. The only removal warning Instagram ever published, in March 2013, named no period and was gone by 2020.
Can I report an inactive account to get its username?#
No Meta page documents an inactivity report. Meta says to pick an available version of the name; the documented grounds for forcing a change are trademark infringement and impersonation.
Does a deactivated Instagram account get deleted automatically?#
Instagram's deactivation article names no maximum period and no automatic deletion point. Logging back in reactivates it.
Can I get my account back after asking Instagram to delete it?#
Yes, if you log back in before the deadline, which is 30 days by default but varies by region. After deletion completes, the account can't be restored.
Can someone else delete my Instagram account for me?#
Not on your behalf: Instagram can't delete a profile for you, and the request must come from someone logged in. After death, verified immediate family can request removal with a birth certificate, death certificate or proof of legal authority.
How can I tell if an Instagram account is inactive?#
Often you can't. Instagram's retired inactivity article said not all account activity can be seen by the public, and logging in, which outsiders never see, was one of its five factors.
