Does Reddit delete inactive accounts? What its terms say
Does Reddit delete inactive accounts? Its terms set no schedule, only a 'may be deactivated' line. See what happens to usernames, posts and how to keep access.
Reddit publishes no rule or schedule for deleting inactive accounts. Its User Agreement says only that an account you stop using without deleting it "may be deactivated due to prolonged inactivity", and it gives no time period. Reddit also says usernames can't be reused, so nobody else can take an old account's name.
Does Reddit delete inactive accounts on a schedule?#
None of the official Reddit documents we checked gives a schedule. The only official statement is one line in the Termination section of the User Agreement. In the version for the US and the rest of the world it's Section 17. That version takes effect July 1, 2026 and was last revised May 26, 2026. The line reads: "If you stop using the Services without deleting your Account, your Account may be deactivated due to prolonged inactivity." The EEA, UK and Switzerland version on the same page has the same wording in Section 16 and doesn't set a period either.
On October 27, 2026 we searched the Reddit Help Center through its search API for "deactivated", "prolonged inactivity" and "inactive account". No article gave a time limit, schedule or process for deactivating or deleting inactive user accounts. The inactivity results covered moderators and communities, plus unrelated features such as Anonymous Browsing sessions and researcher data access. "Deactivated" returned only the article on deleting your own account.
One gap: Reddit's Privacy Policy returned no readable text when we requested it with automated tools, so this post doesn't quote it. For data retention, this post relies on the Help Center's data-deletion article, which links to that policy.
What is the difference between "deactivated" and deleted?#
You delete an account yourself, and Reddit documents how that works. Deactivation for inactivity is something Reddit reserves the right to do, and no Help Center article we found describes what a deactivated account looks like.
Deletion is final. A deleted account can't be reactivated, and administrators can't restore it. The "may be deactivated" line says nothing about whether a deactivated account can be recovered.
The same Termination section also lets Reddit, to the fullest extent permitted by law, "suspend or terminate your Account, moderator status, or ability to access or use the Services at any time for any or no reason". So the terms let Reddit act on a dormant account, but they don't describe any routine process for doing it.
Can a Reddit account be banned or suspended just for being inactive?#
None of Reddit's published account statuses names inactivity as a cause. The Account status overview lists four situations:
- banned
- locked as a security precaution
- disabled or locked so you can't log in
- flagged for spam or inauthentic activity
These are the causes Reddit names:
- Rule violations. Reddit enforces the Reddit Rules with temporary or permanent bans. You get an inbox notice with the reason and, for a temporary ban, how long it lasts.
- Spam, inauthentic activity or ban evasion. These can lead to temporary or permanent bans, which you can appeal.
- Technical irregularities. Reddit may lock an account as a precaution. You unlock it by resetting the password, and the reset email goes to the address on the account. Reddit warns: "We won't be able to help if your email address is out of date."
- Suspicious activity or sitewide rule violations. Either can get an account disabled or locked. If password resets fail, you can send an inquiry about the account's status. If the account was hacked, a "Security problems" request may get it back.
For a dormant account, plan for the security lock. Reddit publishes no rule that ends access just because an account sits unused, but if a precautionary lock does hit, the email address on file is the only documented way back in.
How do temporary and permanent bans work?#
While banned, you can't vote, post, comment, send chats, report content, create communities, edit wiki pages, edit your posts and comments, or create self-serve ads. A temporary ban leaves your profile unchanged. A permanent ban adds a message to your profile saying you're banned, and you may be removed as a moderator.
If you think a sitewide ban for breaking the Reddit Rules was a mistake, you can appeal it within six months by following the instructions in the inbox notice. Bans for spam, inauthentic activity or ban evasion are appealed through a separate form, and that article gives no deadline.
A ban from a single subreddit is set by that community's moderators and applies only there. If you use another account to get around it, that counts as ban evasion, which can lead to a sitewide ban.
If your posts and profile aren't showing up as expected, the account may be flagged for spam. To appeal, log in to that account and use the appeals page.
A permanent ban also follows you to any new account. By using Reddit, you state that you "have not been permanently suspended or removed from the Services."
What happens to your username, posts and karma when an account is deleted?#
When you delete an account, Reddit removes your profile data and detaches your username from your post history, comment history, karma, cake day and avatar. Anyone who follows a link to your profile sees that the account was deleted. Nobody can use the username again, and your old username and password no longer log you in.
Your content stays up. Posts, comments, messages and chats remain on Reddit with no author shown. To remove them, delete them first, then delete the account.
More from Reddit's deletion guide:
- Deleting your account doesn't cancel a Reddit Premium subscription.
- You need your password to confirm.
- Reddit admins can't delete an account on your behalf.
- After you delete, Reddit starts a deletion process "which commences within 90 days" to remove or anonymize the account from its servers.
- On reddit.com, go to Account Settings → Advanced → Delete Account and tick "I understand that deleted accounts aren't recoverable". Old Reddit has a delete tab in preferences. The iOS and Android apps have a Delete account option in Settings.
- If you made the account with Google or Apple, disconnect that login under Account authorization first. If you don't have a password, you'll be asked to create one.
- If you signed up with a phone number and never set a password, Reddit sends a 6-digit code to confirm the deletion.
After deletion, Reddit says it "promptly makes deleted data unavailable on the Reddit platform and subsequently deletes such data", unless it has a legal reason or a legitimate business need to keep it longer. Moderators, developers, researchers and data licensees who use Reddit's public content must stop displaying or using it once it's deleted.
Can someone else claim an old or inactive username?#
No. Reddit's Help Center answers this question, "Someone who hasn't posted in a long time has the username I want, can I have it?", with "No, usernames can't be reused." The rule also covers deleted accounts, for the original owner as well as everyone else.
You can't rename your account either. Once a username is finalized, it can't be changed in any way, including its capitalization. If you want a different name, you can create a new account and keep the old one. Reddit allows multiple accounts with three conditions:
- You can verify them all with the same email address.
- Voting on the same posts or comments from more than one of them counts as vote manipulation.
- Each Google or Apple login can be linked to only one Reddit account at a time.
Where does inactivity have a defined consequence on Reddit?#
Moderation is the one area where Reddit spells out what inactivity costs:
- Inactive moderator restrictions. Inactive moderators can be blocked from some high-impact actions, such as inviting moderators, editing permissions, and changing a community's type or description. This applies only to public or restricted subreddits with two or more mods, over 5,000 subscribers and at least 50 contributions a week. Reddit says its exact formula for "inactive" isn't public.
- r/redditrequest. If no mod actions happen in a community for 30 days or longer, someone else may request to take it over. The same applies if a moderator's account is permanently banned. If a mod doesn't respond within five days, the community may be transferred.
- Who can request. The requester's account must be at least 90 days old and have at least 100 comment karma and 100 post karma. It also needs a verified email, two-factor authentication turned on, and no recent ban or suspension.
If you moderate a community and plan to step away, the 30-day window is the deadline that matters. It puts your community at risk, not your account.
How do inactive, deleted, banned and locked accounts compare?#
| Status | What causes it | Username or profile | Posts and comments | Can you get back in? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inactive | You stop using it | Can't be reused by anyone else | No published rule changes them | No published process ends access, but the terms say the account "may be deactivated" |
| Deleted by you | You delete it and confirm with your password (or a code for phone-only accounts) | Unusable by anyone, permanently | Stay up with no author shown | No. It can't be reactivated, and admins can't restore it |
| Temporarily banned | Reddit Rules violations, spam, inauthentic activity or ban evasion | Profile unchanged | You can't post, comment, vote or edit | The inbox notice gives the ban's length. Appeal Reddit Rules bans within six months |
| Permanently banned | Reddit Rules violations, spam, inauthentic activity or ban evasion | Profile shows a banned message | You can't post, comment, vote or edit | Only through a successful appeal. Reddit Rules bans have a six-month window |
| Locked as a precaution | Technical irregularities | Not stated | Not stated | Yes, by resetting the password through the email on the account |
| Disabled or locked | Suspicious activity or sitewide rule violations | Not stated | Not stated | Send an inquiry. Hacked accounts go through a "Security problems" request |
| Flagged for spam | Suspected spam or inauthentic activity | Profile may not show as expected | May not show as expected | Appeal while logged in to the affected account |

How do you keep access to a Reddit account you rarely use?#
Reddit documents no inactivity purge, but it does document lockouts. An account with no email can't be recovered, and a security lock clears only through the email on file. Work through this list once while you're still logged in, because some steps, such as getting backup codes, need an active session.
- Add an email address and verify it. Without one, you'll be locked out if you forget your password after you log out. Reddit then has no way to know the account is yours. All it suggests is checking for passwords saved in your browser or phone.
- Add an email if you signed up with a phone number. On the web it's under Account Settings → Email address. In the app, go to Settings, tap your username under Account Settings, then choose Add email address. Click the verification link Reddit sends.
- Keep that email current. After a security lock, you unlock the account by resetting the password through the email on file.
- Update your phone number if you change or deactivate the one on the account, as the User Agreement asks.
- Use a strong, unique password and keep it in a password manager. Reddit recommends both.
- Turn on two-factor authentication from a computer's web browser. It's under Settings → Account authorization, and each login then asks for a 6-digit code from an authenticator app. It only covers password logins. If you log in with Google or Apple, set up 2FA with that provider.
- Save your ten backup codes. On desktop web, go to Settings → Account authorization → Access your backup codes and store the codes in your password manager. Generating new codes cancels the old ones, and you can only generate them while logged in.
- Redo 2FA when you get a new phone. Reddit says to turn it off and set it up again on the new phone.
- Write down the exact username. If you forget it, you can search your inbox for Reddit's sign-up emails, or request a password reset to see some of the usernames tied to your email. Both only work if the account has an email.
- Know how password reset works. "Forgot password?" accepts a username or an email address. Resetting logs you out on every device, and the link in the email expires after a limited time.
If 2FA ever locks you out, Reddit's recovery options are:
- Use a backup code.
- Generate new codes from another device where you're still logged in.
- From a logged-in session, connect a Google or Apple login and use it to sign in.
- Check that your authenticator app is up to date and that your device's time and time zone are correct.
Can someone else manage your Reddit account if you're unreachable?#
No. Reddit's terms rule out handing an account over. The User Agreement says you "will not license, sell, or transfer your Account without our prior written approval", and Reddit advises against sharing accounts. Deletion has to be confirmed with your password, or with a code for phone-only accounts, and Reddit admins can't delete an account on your behalf.
This is a real gap if the account runs a community or speaks for a business. Reddit offers no process for someone else to take over the account, and after 30 days without mod actions, another user can request a community you moderate. While you're still active, add a co-moderator you trust and write down what should happen to the account. A check-in tool such as Proceedly can store those instructions and a note of where your backup codes are kept, without storing the password itself. If you stop checking in, it sends them to a person you name.
FAQ#
How long before Reddit deletes an inactive account?#
Reddit publishes no time period. The User Agreement says an unused account "may be deactivated due to prolonged inactivity" and says nothing more. Our Help Center search on October 27, 2026 found no article with a schedule.
Will my old username become available if I delete my account?#
No. A deleted account's username can't be reused by you or anyone else.
Can I undo deleting my Reddit account?#
No. A deleted account can't be reactivated, and administrators can't restore it.
Does deleting my account delete my posts and comments?#
No. They stay on Reddit with no author shown. Delete them yourself before you delete the account.
How long does Reddit take to remove a deleted account's data?#
Reddit says the deletion process "commences within 90 days". It says it makes deleted data unavailable promptly and deletes it afterwards, unless it has a legal reason or a legitimate business need to keep it.
How long do I have to appeal a Reddit ban?#
For a sitewide ban for breaking the Reddit Rules, you have six months from when you receive it. Follow the instructions in the inbox notice. Reddit's article on bans for spam, inauthentic activity or ban evasion gives no deadline.
Can I get back into an old account that has no email?#
Only if you can find the password. Without an email on the account, Reddit has no way to know the account is yours, so check for passwords saved in your browser or phone.
