Yes. Discord says accounts unused for 2 years or more may be scheduled to be deleted, it may warn you by email or text first, and logging in on the website or app cancels the deletion. The trap is two-factor authentication: if you lost your backup codes and have no SMS backup, Discord cannot remove 2FA and tells you to create a new account.

How long before Discord deletes an inactive account?#

Two years without use. Three Discord help pages give the same number. The Inactive Account Deletion article is one. The account deletion article says an account inactive and unused for 2 years or more "will be scheduled for deletion". The data retention page says Discord "may delete it for you" after two years of inactivity.

The wording shifts from page to page: "may be scheduled", "will be scheduled", "may delete". Two years is when an account becomes eligible. Discord publishes no date on which the deletion is guaranteed to run.

What warning does Discord send, and how do you stop the deletion?#

As an account nears the 2-year mark, Discord says you may get an email or text message warning that the account is scheduled to be deleted. The account deletion article says the notice goes to the email or phone number associated with the account.

Those contact details are the only warning channel Discord describes. A notice sent to an old school address, or to a phone number that now belongs to someone else, reaches nobody who can act on it.

Stopping it takes one step: log into Discord on the website or app. Discord says you should then receive a message confirming the deletion was cancelled.

What counts as activity, and does anyone logging in reset the clock?#

Discord's inactive account article names one remedy, logging in, and does not list any other qualifying actions. Google is more specific: reading or sending an email, using Google Drive, watching a YouTube video and using Sign in with Google all count as activity there.

Discord's article on deceased or incapacitated users puts it the other way round: as long as no one logs into the account, the inactivity deletion will proceed automatically. That article describes a login, not a check on who logged in. It does not give anyone else permission to use your account. It only confirms that a login is the one signal Discord's help center names.

What happens if 2FA is on and the backup codes are lost?#

This is the step that turns a forgotten Discord account into a lost one. Discord says that without your backup codes it is unable to remove 2FA or issue new backup codes, and you will have to create a new account. Its multi-factor authentication page says the same: Support cannot remove MFA from an account.

Picture an owner coming back after two quiet years with a new phone and no backup codes. They can read the deletion warning and still be unable to log in and cancel it. The one exception is SMS MFA: if it was set up, Discord's lockout article says a code sent to your phone works instead.

Where the codes usually turn up:

A text file or screenshot. Discord's lockout article says backup codes may have been saved as a txt file called "discord_backup_codes.txt" or as a screenshot in your photo gallery. Search old laptops, phones and cloud drives for that exact filename.
Inside the account. While you can still log in, the codes are under User Settings → My Account → View Backup Codes, where you can view and download them.
Where Discord tells you to keep them. Discord recommends storing them in a password manager, or printing them out and hiding them. The same page recommends adding a security key (passkey) and says SMS MFA can only be turned on after an authenticator app is set up.

Is there a grace period after Discord deletes an account?#

Discord's pages give two different numbers, and both describe deletions you start yourself. Neither page says whether an inactivity deletion gets the same hold.

A deletion you start yourself sits in a "pending deletion" state for 15 days. Restoring the account within that window cancels it. After 15 days the deletion is irreversible, and Support cannot speed it up.

The retention page is less exact. It says Discord "typically" holds a deleted account for 15 to 30 days so it can be recovered, then deletes identifying information and anonymizes or aggregates the rest. Plan on 15 days and do not count on the extra 15.

What does Discord keep after an account is deleted?#

Deleting an account does not delete everything the account posted or supplied. Discord's retention page sets these periods:

The last row causes the most regret. Discord says to delete specific content before you delete your account. Once the account is gone, the messages stay visible to others, and you no longer have the login you would need to remove them.

What happens to a server when its owner's account is deleted?#

For an inactivity deletion, Discord does not say. None of its help-center articles on account deletion, data retention or ownership transfer cover a server whose owner is removed under the 2-year rule.

A deletion you start yourself is covered. You cannot delete your Discord account until you have transferred ownership of, or deleted, every server you own. Your servers then continue under the new owner you chose, your account is anonymized across all servers and messages, and Nitro and Server Boost subscriptions are cancelled.

An inactivity deletion skips the step where you pick a new owner, because you are not there to pick one. Until Discord documents what happens, transfer ownership while you can still log in.

Can an admin or moderator claim ownership of an inactive owner's server?#

Only in narrow cases. Discord lets a member request an ownership transfer when a server owner steps away or becomes inactive, but the request must meet all five criteria. Discord says requests that miss any of them are denied, with no exceptions:

The server has 100 members, based on active user count.
The owner hasn't accessed their account for at least a month.
The person requesting has been active on their account in the last 30 days.
The person requesting has administrator or moderator permissions in the server.
The server is not monetized.

The ticket has rules too. Discord cannot transfer ownership to someone asking on another user's behalf, so the would-be new owner files the ticket unless the server is Partnered or Verified. Each ticket covers one server and needs the server name and ID, plus the usernames and user IDs of both the inactive owner and the new owner.

If the inactive owner is not banned, Discord contacts them for consent, and they have 7 days to respond. Approval or silence past 7 days lets the transfer go ahead once the server is eligible. A refusal stops it.

That is the only recovery route Discord documents, and small or monetized servers can't use it. A 60-member study group is shut out, and so is an 80-member customer support server or any server with paid subscriptions.

How do you transfer server ownership in advance?#

On desktop, following Discord's ownership transfer guide:

Select the server and open the Members tab.
Right-click the member who will take over and press Transfer Ownership.
In the confirmation window, select the toggle to acknowledge the transfer, then select Transfer Ownership.
Enter your MFA code if MFA is enabled on your account.

On mobile, go to Server Settings → Members, tap the member, select Transfer Ownership, confirm, then press Transfer. You stay in the server as a member, with whatever access your role's permissions give you.

The transfer is one-way: once a server has changed hands, Discord's Support team is not able to transfer it back.

What extra steps apply to monetized, Partnered or Verified servers?#

Partnered or Verified servers. The owner must submit the transfer request themselves through a support ticket, which Discord's creator support says adds an additional layer of safety for server owners. Turning on the Community feature does not make a server Partnered or Verified.
Servers with Server Subscriptions. The owner receives all Server Subscription payouts, and after a transfer all payouts go to the new owner. The new owner must meet the Server Subscriptions eligibility requirements. The article says Server Subscriptions are only available to US-based creators, so the new owner must be based in the US. They also need a Team with payout information validated by Discord's payout provider, and they take on delivering subscriber perks. If the transfer fails, ownership and payout info revert to the original owner.

A successor for a monetized server has to finish this setup before the transfer can succeed. Check that they can do it now, not after the owner has gone quiet.

Does Discord delete inactive servers?#

None of the Discord help-center articles cited here describe deleting inactive servers. The server-side "inactive" tool Discord documents is Prune, which lets anyone with the Kick Members permission mass-kick members who haven't been active on Discord within 7 or 30 days. It removes members, not servers.

What can family or a representative request?#

Less than most families expect. Discord's article on deceased or incapacitated users says that, for privacy and security reasons, Discord is unable to provide access, disclose personal information, make changes, or share data tied to an account. It has no feature to memorialize or transfer accounts.

The options it describes:

Password reset. Someone with access to the account's email address can start a password reset. The 2FA rule above still applies.
Deletion from the account's email. A request sent from the email address on the account can ask for deletion using a confirmation sentence Discord provides.
Deletion from a different email. Discord asks for the account's email address and username, and documentation such as a death certificate or coroner's report. It also asks for proof of relationship (a marriage license, birth certificate, last will and testament, estate letter or power of attorney), a valid photo ID or passport, and an explicit written deletion statement.

None of these options hands a server to anyone. If a community owner becomes unreachable, the server's fate depends on what they set up in advance, or on meeting the five criteria above.

Discord's clock is as long as Google's, but Google offers Inactive Account Manager and Apple offers Digital Legacy. Discord has no tool to memorialize or transfer an account and no documented rule for the servers the account owned. What should Discord server owners do before an account lapses?#

Work through this checklist while you can still log in:

Log in and check the contact details. Make sure the email and phone number on the account are ones you still read, because that is where the deletion notice may go.
Download your backup codes again. Go to User Settings → My Account → View Backup Codes, and store them where Discord suggests: a password manager, or a printed and hidden copy.
Add SMS as a backup. A code sent to your phone is the documented way back in if you lose your authenticator and your backup codes.
Name a successor for each server. Write down their username and user ID next to the server name and server ID.
Transfer servers you have already stepped back from. After a transfer you stay a member with your role's permissions, and Support cannot reverse it.
Check whether your server qualifies for the inactive-owner request. With fewer than 100 members, or any monetization, it doesn't, so an advance transfer or a written plan is the only safeguard.
Prepare a monetized successor. For Server Subscriptions they must meet the eligibility requirements, be US-based, and have a Team with validated payout info before a transfer can succeed.
Delete content you don't want left behind. Content you shared stays visible to other users after deletion, just no longer tied to your account.
Write down where access lives. Your co-admin needs to know which email the account uses, where the backup codes are stored, and which server IDs a Support ticket would need.
