What does the law require for people who work alone?#
It depends where you are, and the honest answer is that most places impose a duty to protect rather than a checkbox to tick.
United Kingdom. The HSE's guidance Protecting lone workers (INDG73) sets out that employers must assess the risks of working alone, then provide the training, supervision, and means of communication to control them. Monitoring is explicit: the HSE tells employers to keep in touch with lone workers and use supervision and monitoring — including regular contact and check-in procedures — to make sure they stay safe.
United States. There is no specific OSHA standard that requires a lone worker policy in general industry — but that doesn't mean employers are off the hook. Under the General Duty Clause, Section 5(a)(1) of the OSH Act, every employer must provide a workplace free from recognized hazards likely to cause death or serious harm, and a known lone-working hazard falls squarely under it. Some specific standards go further and name check-ins directly — OSHA 1915.84, "Working alone," requires that an employee working alone in shipyard employment be checked on periodically through the shift and at its end.
The through-line in both countries: if a role involves working alone, you're expected to have a way to know the person is okay and a plan for when they're not. A check-in app is one common way to meet that expectation — but the procedure matters more than the tool.
How does a missed check-in escalate?#
