Does Netflix delete inactive accounts? The 24-month rule
Does Netflix delete inactive accounts? Netflix cancels unused memberships after asking you, then deletes the account 24 months later. Timelines and fixes here.
Netflix's help center doesn't describe any rule that deletes an account just because nobody uses it. In May 2020 Netflix said it would cancel the paid membership of people who hadn't watched anything in the year since joining, or in more than two years, but only after asking them to confirm. The account itself, with its profiles and viewing history, is deleted 24 months after the membership is cancelled.
Does Netflix delete your account if you stop using it?#
Not directly. Two separate Netflix rules apply, and the "Netflix deletes inactive accounts" headline merges them into one.
- Cancellation for inactivity. This is the policy Netflix announced in 2020. It ends the paid membership and doesn't erase anything.
- Deletion after cancellation. The help center says it is Netflix's "standard practice to automatically delete Netflix accounts 24 months after the membership has been canceled."
Netflix's page on deletion, removal and retention of information says it keeps personal information where the law requires or allows it, and for its billing or records purposes. It says nothing about deleting accounts or profiles because they haven't been used.
Combine the two rules and you get a timeline for an account nobody touches. A new member who never watched anything could have the membership cancelled after one year without viewing, then lose the account 24 months later: about three years in total. A long-standing member who stopped watching hits the two-year inactivity mark first, so deletion comes at roughly four years or more. Both timelines assume nobody answered Netflix's confirmation message, and they only hold if Netflix still applies the 2020 policy.
What did Netflix actually announce in May 2020?#
The policy cancelled memberships. It didn't delete accounts.
On 21 May 2020, Eddy Wu, Netflix's director of product innovation, set out the policy:
- Members who hadn't watched anything in the year since joining would be asked to confirm they wanted to keep their membership.
- So would anyone who hadn't watched anything for more than two years.
- Netflix said it would ask by email or in-app notification.
- If a member didn't confirm, the subscription would be cancelled automatically.
Netflix said these accounts were less than half of one percent of its members, "only a few hundred thousand", out of about 183 million subscribers. It also said the accounts were already factored into its financial guidance.
In 2020, members who rejoined within 10 months got back their favorites, profiles, viewing preferences and account details. That figure is out of date: the current help center says 24 months.
The current help center has no page on the inactivity policy, so it's not clear whether Netflix still applies it the way it described in 2020.
Which of these is happening to your account?#
| State | What starts it | What's kept | Can you undo it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancelled by you | You cancel at netflix.com/cancelplan. You can keep watching until the billing period ends, but an account on hold closes immediately | Viewing activity, recommendations, ratings, account details and gameplay history for 24 months, plus your profiles | Yes. Restart within 24 months |
| Cancelled for inactivity (2020 policy) | No viewing for a year after joining, or for more than two years, and no reply to Netflix's email or in-app message | Same as above. The 24-month deletion rule applies once a membership is cancelled | Yes. Restart within 24 months |
| Deleted by you | Security → Delete account → Permanently Delete | Information kept where the law requires or allows it, or for billing and records. Emails you send to privacy@netflix.com are kept for 6 years | Yes, from the Account page until the current billing period ends |
| Deleted automatically | 24 months after cancellation | Information kept where the law requires or allows it, or for billing and records | The help center describes no way to restart |
How long does Netflix keep your account after you cancel?#
24 months. Netflix's cancellation page says: "We keep your Viewing Activity for 24 months after your account closes." The same 24 months covers:
- Viewing activity
- Recommendations
- Ratings
- Account details
- Gameplay history. For games without cloud saves, the saves come back only if the game and its data are still installed on the device it was played on
If you restart within that window, Netflix says your "profiles, viewing preferences and more will be waiting for you." After cancelling, "You won't be charged again unless you restart your account." If you have a gift card or promotion balance left, the service keeps running for as many months as that balance covers, so the 24-month clock starts later.
Does Netflix delete inactive profiles?#
Netflix doesn't say it does. The profiles help article doesn't mention deleting unused profiles automatically. It only explains how to delete a profile yourself, with three limits:
- One account can have up to 5 profiles. An Extra Member account is limited to 1.
- "The main profile on your account can't be deleted."
- "Deleting a profile will delete the viewing history and game saves for that profile." The article doesn't describe any way to get a deleted profile back.
What does "This account is no longer active" mean?#
Netflix says the message "Sorry this account is no longer active" (error E111) has two possible causes. Either the membership is inactive or on hold, or the data stored on your device needs refreshing. If the membership has lapsed, use the Restart Membership option on the Account page, or fix any payment problem. If you're still inside the 24-month window after a cancellation, restarting brings your profiles back.
How do you delete a Netflix account permanently?#
You don't have to wait 24 months. Netflix's deletion instructions are:
- Open the Account page and go to Security.
- Select Delete account.
- Complete the Security Check.
- Tick the box and confirm with Permanently Delete.
In the app, the path is My Netflix → your profile name → Account, then Delete account under Settings. Netflix emails you a confirmation. You can still cancel the request from the Account page until the current billing period ends.
If you can't use the apps, cancel at netflix.com/cancelplan and then email privacy@netflix.com from the email address on the account. A message from any other address doesn't count, including an alias, even if you put the account address in the message. Former members use the same route. Netflix keeps whatever you send to that address for 6 years.
If you pay through a third party, Netflix says "you'll need to cancel the account with your payment partner." The account can only be deleted after that cancellation takes effect.
How do you keep a profile before an account closes?#
Use Profile Transfer, which Netflix announced on 17 October 2022. It copies a profile to a new or existing account. It can also move the profile into an extra member slot, but only while that slot is being bought. The transfer includes:
- Profile name and icon
- Recommendations and viewing history
- My List
- Settings, game saves and game handle
Payment information doesn't transfer. The profile has to be on an active account, so transfer it before anyone cancels. Kids profiles, profiles in an Extra Member account, and profiles with a PIN or an email address attached can't be transferred until the PIN or email is removed.
What should family do with a Netflix account when the owner dies?#
Netflix has a specific help page for this. The order matters, because Profile Transfer stops working the moment the membership is cancelled.
Before you cancel
- Ask whether anyone wants to keep a profile. Use Profile Transfer first, because it only works on an active account.
- Find out how the account is billed. If it goes through a third party, cancel with that payment partner, not with Netflix.
If you can sign in
- Use Cancel Membership on the Account page (netflix.com/CancelPlan).
- If needed, sign out of all devices from the Manage Devices page.
If you can't sign in
- Gather the account's email address or phone number.
- Gather the full payment details currently used for Netflix.
- Contact Netflix through Contact Us. Netflix says it "can help you cancel their Netflix account on their behalf." The official page doesn't mention a death certificate.
After cancelling
- If a gift card balance remains, expect the account to keep running for as many months as the balance covers.
- Do nothing else if you're happy to wait. The account is deleted 24 months after cancellation.
Without a login, everything hinges on the two things Netflix asks for: the sign-in email or phone number, and the payment details on file. Netflix is one of many subscriptions that need these details when you die. Proceedly lets you write down where those details live and who should act on them. If you miss your check-ins, it hands that plan to the people you name. It never stores the passwords themselves.
FAQ#
Does Netflix delete accounts that haven't been used in years?#
Not directly. In 2020 Netflix said it would cancel inactive memberships after asking members to confirm. An account is deleted 24 months after its membership is cancelled.
Will Netflix warn me before cancelling an inactive membership?#
That's what Netflix said in 2020. It would ask by email or in-app notification and cancel only if you didn't respond. The current help center doesn't describe this process.
Is the 10-month window still right?#
No. The 10-month figure is from 2020. Netflix's help center now says 24 months.
Can I pause Netflix instead of cancelling?#
Sometimes. Pausing isn't available on the Basic plan or with some payment methods, and "Accounts can only be paused for a total of 3 months."
Can I get my profiles back after cancelling?#
Yes, if you restart within 24 months. Your profiles and viewing preferences are kept until then. For games without cloud saves, the game and its data also need to be still installed on the device.
Can I delete my main profile?#
No. "The main profile on your account can't be deleted." To remove it, you delete the whole account.
Does Netflix need a death certificate to cancel a deceased member's account?#
Netflix's official page doesn't mention one. It asks for the account's email address or phone number and the full payment details currently in use.
